The Glamorous Picnic in progress

Last month we wrote about The Glamorous Picnic, a very cool art installation/project/thing. In addition to creating perfect concrete circles we’ve been busy pouring this project.

BAHKO Concrete employee/founder/monkey Anthony holds up one of the 500lb table tops. It’s the most physical exertion he’s done all month. Forever. It’s the most he’s ever exerted himself. And he’s not doing anything except making a ridiculous face.

Concrete legs

The table legs and the table top will be joined via mortise and tenon joint. Pictured above is a closeup of the mortise. Or is it the tenon? The crumbly bits falling out are from the foam core we used to help reduce the weight of the concrete.

The red and white glass tiles are lickably beautiful. This weekend we’ll let them out of their boxes and apply them to their concrete bed.

    Concrete Firepit Pt3

Getting a 61″ ring onto the truck was a challenge, but seeing it in place was gratifying!

Next it will get cultured stone like the base for the outdoor counters we installed yesterday. When it’s all done we’ll get some pictures that do justice to the color and depth of these pieces.

      Glamorous Picnic

This month we’ll be helping artist Gabriela Bertiller realize her project for the FLOW exhibition at Randall’s Island this year. Bahko will be fabricating the tables and benches out of lightweight, foam core concrete that will be covered in red and white glass tile. Find out more at http://www.flow12.org/.

        Concrete Firepit Pt2

There’s something about making a big circle that’s really satisfying. The way this huge ring looked as I was flipping it, how it framed different parts of  the shop, was interesting because of it’s size.

An arm’s length self portrait gives a sense of scale.

Finally, here it is after the first polish. The goal here is expose a little of the aggregate but maintain the variations that result from a hand applied face coat. The trick is knowing when to stop.

          Time to make the donuts

This donut is 5′ across and when it’s all done it’ll have a fire filling. Tasty!
